Inherited a WordPress blog with 480 posts and 1,900 tags. Yes, almost four tags per post, most used once. Tags like “tips”, “tips and tricks”, “best tips”.
In GSC about 1,100 tag pages are indexed and maybe 20 of them get any impressions at all.
My plan is:
– keep 15-20 tags that actually group things well and write a short intro for each
– delete the rest and redirect to the closest kept tag or category
– noindex tag archives with fewer than 5 posts going forward
The SEO plugin just has a single toggle to noindex all tags, which is tempting since it’s one click. But a couple of the tag pages rank for decent terms.
Anyone done a big tag cleanup? Did you see any change on the actual posts, or just a tidier index?
