Small rant. I manage a modest sized marketing blog on the side and I now get somewhere around 30 emails a day offering guest posts, “link insertion at a low price”, or asking me to sell links. Most are clearly templated, some pretend to have read my site.
The result is I’ve stopped reading anything from people I don’t know. And I know most editors are doing the same.
Which means when I’m on the other side doing outreach for a client with a genuinely useful piece, I’m competing with that noise. Reply rates on cold emails to editors in my niche have halved in two years.
What I’ve started doing:
– getting in touch via social first, commenting on their posts for a few weeks
– only pitching people who have publicly asked for contributions
– saying clearly in the first line that I’m not selling anything and not asking for a paid placement
Is anyone else seeing this? How are you getting past editors who’ve gone completely deaf to cold email?
