Working on a catalogue of about 2,400 products. Current meta descriptions are templated: product name + “buy online at best price, free shipping”. Terrible, I know.

I sampled 200 product queries in GSC and checked what Google actually shows. It uses our description maybe 1 time in 4. The rest of the time it pulls from the product description or specs.

    So I’m torn:
    – write proper unique descriptions for the top 300 by impressions and leave the rest
    – generate all of them from specs with a better template
    – drop them entirely and let Google pick

I don’t think descriptions move rankings, but CTR does matter, and the rewrites Google picks are sometimes awful (one shows a returns policy snippet).

What do you do on big catalogues? And has anyone measured a CTR difference after rewriting at scale?
