Every draft I write goes through Hemingway before an editor sees it. It highlights long sentences, passive voice and adverbs in colour, which sounds basic but it catches the rambling that I stop noticing after the third read.
Tips from using it daily:
– Do not chase the grade level blindly. I aim for around grade 8 on how-to posts and accept higher on technical pieces.
– Fix the red (very hard to read) sentences first. That alone usually cuts 10 percent of the word count.
– Paste in section by section rather than the whole post, it is easier to see patterns in your writing.
– The free web version is enough. I never needed the desktop app.
Downside: it has no idea about context. It will flag a perfectly fine long sentence in a technical explanation, and following every suggestion makes writing choppy and robotic. Use it as a pointer, not a rulebook.
